Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Research Group
Tropical Disease and
Global Health Radiology Imaging Research Group
Advancing Radiology Imaging for
Tropical Diseases, Travel-Related Diseases, and Emerging Infections
Brief Description
This research group,
part of the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology KBK at the Faculty of
Medicine, Universitas Udayana, focuses on the development and utilization of
radiology imaging for the diagnosis, evaluation, and monitoring of tropical
diseases, travel-related infections, and emerging/re-emerging diseases.
Research focuses include tuberculosis, parasitic infections, zoonotic diseases,
emerging viral infections, and musculoskeletal or systemic manifestations of
tropical diseases. The group integrates precision radiology, quantitative
imaging, radiomics, and artificial intelligence to improve diagnostic accuracy
and support healthcare systems in tropical and global settings. With Bali’s
strategic position as an international destination, this group holds a key role
in advancing tropical disease radiology research at national and international
levels.
Background
Tropical diseases and travel-related infections remain global health
challenges, particularly in Southeast Asia. High human mobility, climate
change, urbanization, and human–animal interaction increase the risk of
emerging and re-emerging diseases such as tuberculosis, dengue, chikungunya,
leptospirosis, parasitosis, and novel viral infections. Radiology plays a
crucial role in early detection, organ characterization, complication
assessment, and therapy monitoring.
However, imaging interpretation of tropical
diseases is often descriptive and not quantitatively standardized. The
development of quantitative imaging biomarkers, radiomics, and AI offers
opportunities to improve diagnostic accuracy, differentiate infectious
etiologies, and predict clinical outcomes. This innovation aligns with global
trends toward precision radiology and evidence-based clinical decision support.
As a tropical region with a high infectious
disease burden and an international tourism hub, Indonesia—particularly
Bali—faces unique challenges in diagnosing tropical and travel-related
diseases. Comprehensive radiology imaging research is therefore highly relevant
to support early detection, outbreak preparedness, and improved healthcare
quality.
This research group aligns with the vision of the
Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Udayana, in developing leading research based
on regional health issues, strengthening health technology innovation, and
integrating education, research, and clinical service.
Vision
To become a national
center of excellence in the development of precision radiology imaging for the
diagnosis and evaluation of tropical diseases, travel medicine, and emerging
infections.
Mission
1.
Develop leading radiology research on tropical
diseases and travel-related infections.
2.
Develop quantitative imaging biomarkers and
radiomics for infection diagnosis.
3.
Integrate research results into Radiology
residency education and clinical services.
4.
Produce internationally reputable scientific
publications and imaging technology innovations.
5.
Strengthen national and international
collaborations in tropical radiology.
Research Roadmap
Short-Term
(1–2 Years)
Focus: Imaging
pattern mapping and protocol standardization
- Identify and characterize imaging patterns
of endemic tropical diseases (tuberculosis, dengue, leptospirosis,
parasitic, and fungal infections).
- Document radiological manifestations of
travel-related infections in international and domestic patients.
- Develop imaging databases for tropical and
emerging infections in local populations.
- Standardize CT, MRI, and USG protocols for
tropical infectious disease evaluation.
- Integrate case-based research into Radiology
residency education.
Outcome: Regional
imaging atlas & standard imaging protocols for tropical diseases.
Medium-Term
(3–5 Years)
Focus:
Diagnostic validation and infectious etiology differentiation
- Identify imaging parameters to differentiate
bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections.
- Validate quantitative imaging biomarkers to
assess disease activity and therapy response.
- Differentiate imaging features between
tropical diseases and non-infectious conditions (neoplasms, autoimmune
inflammation).
- Conduct national multicenter collaborations
for tropical and emerging infections.
- Develop predictive models for complications
and clinical outcomes based on imaging.
Outcome: Evidence-based
radiology diagnostic algorithms for tropical infectious diseases.
Long-Term (5+
Years)
Focus:
Precision radiology, AI, and outbreak preparedness
- Develop radiomics signatures for tropical
and emerging infectious diseases.
- Develop AI tools for early detection and
classification of emerging infections.
- Implement imaging-based decision-support
systems to guide clinical decision-making.
- Integrate imaging surveillance into outbreak
preparedness and public health systems.
- Contribute to national and regional
guidelines on tropical disease imaging.
Outcome: Clinical
implementation, AI-based decision support systems, and contributions to
national guidelines.
